Tot 1981 was Belize een Britse kolonie, dat beter bekend stond als Brits-Honduras, hoewel er wel aanspraak op gemaakt werd door Mexico en Guatemala. In 1973 kreeg het officieel de naam Belize.

 

In Belize domineren rijst en bonen de inhoud van veel gerechten. De Belizianen zijn dan ook dol op rice and beans, dat vaak geserveerd wordt met een salade of verschillende soorten frisse sausjes. Ook kokosnoot is een veelvoorkomend product in hun keuken. Hudut is een populair gerecht gemaakt van deze noot. Net als de creole bread and bun. Proef ook eens de cassave pudding of potato pone. Natuurlijk kent men er ook veel visgerechten

De Belizaanse keuken is een combinatie van de Afrikaanse, Maya en Caribische keuken.

Tamales: kip en pittige saus in maïsmeel gewikkeld en gestoomd in een bananenblad

Panades: Een zachte dubbelgevouwen in olie gefrituurde tortilla met gemalen vis

Dukunu: Gestoomde maïsdeeg verpakt in een bananenblad

Boil-up: Knolgewassen zoals cassave, zoete aardappel, planting en en cassave met vis en varkensstaart, gekookte eieren en tomatensaus

Garnaches: Krokante tortillas met bonen en rijst erop

Escabeche: Uiensoep met kip

Seré: vis en cassave in kokosmelk bereidt

Tablata: gebakken kokosvlees met gember, suiker en water

Belize, the only English-speaking country in Central America, has a potpourri of culinary influences, including Chinese, Mexican, Creole, and European. You'll find seafood or chicken and a hearty helping of spices at the heart of most Belizean meals.

Belize cuisine varies from north to south. In the north region Belizean cuisine is very similar to Mexican cuisine and it has borrowed various ingredients from their northern neighbors such as the assortments for the fish like memey, guanabana or cherimoya. In the southern region the dishes are more similar to Spanish cuisine which offered their delightful ingredients like nuts, diverse spices, cocoa and seeds. The best sauce for the seafood is the Belizean hot sauce, which is also added to Chicken or Pork. Belizean cuisine offers a large variety of seafood such as lobster, shrimps served with a variety of breads like coconut bread, cassava bread or carrot coconut bread. There are numerous dishes served with rice and beans such as stuffed baked Chicken, stew Chicken, stew fish, fried fish or meat balls. Other delicious dishes include pawpaw bread, guava cheese, fresh corn tortillas, sweet potato, and breadfruit.
